, and certainly death and carnage on our streets all across the cities of america, this particular incident, i think, is a culmination of a variety of these massacre type incidents that we've seen over the last few years, and they're increasingly happening. the issues of high capacity weapons, these magazines, assault weapons being used, body armor available out in the open marketplace. these are items that civilians basically should never really have. there's no reason for a civilian to have an assault type weapon. you know, other people will talk about, well, it was converted from something else. what it is is semiautomatic or in some cases possibly automatic weapons not used for sport, not used for legitimate hunting purposes, and they are tremendously dangerous. the children it's been reported many shot multiple times with a high volume high velocity weapon. the individual shooter in the connecticut case prior to him shooting himself would have been prepared to engage the connecticut state troopers or other law enforcement because he had body armor and numerous weapons. the glok, the 15 bu

in america has been rapidly in decline over the last decade or 15 years since they peaked in the late 1990s around the -- with the columbine shooting, and since then the number of school shootings has gone down for a number of reasons. teachers now have better training to spot potential trouble. other students are told to report cries situations where they think other students are out of control, better anti-bullying programs, law enforcement people in the schools. all of hose things together are able to spot potential trouble signs from the source of what the school shootings were at their peak, which is other young people shooting their fellow classmates. this is a situation that's very difficult to defend against when you have an adult walking into the school, so it's the worst possible situation for a school, the hardest thing to defend itself against. >> just briefly, i know you have to go, pete, to do more reporting, but do wynn anything about the security and whether there are magnetometers or security officials or any kind of checks on -- at the elementary school level, especially i

things that the middle class and america really depends on. one year or two years at the most, but the tax system is made permanent. well, i just think that's grossly unfair. grossly unfair. as i have said before, no deal is better than a bad deal, and this looks like a very bad deal the way this is shaping up. >> so, senator kuhns, is $400,000 on individuals a bad deal as tom harken described, it or is some deal better than no deal at this point? >> well, first, let's just talk about our broader values and the context we're operating in. given the real financial strains on our federal budget, given divided government where the house is controlled by republicans, the senate by democrats, every deal that we can actually reach and enact is going to be a bad deal from our perspective. we're going to have to give many some way to get a deal of some kind. in my view if we can enact a deal here today that will give more than 8% of americans of families and small businesses confidence about their tax rate going forward, by only raising rates back to the clinton era on income above $4

america? >> actually, look, i am surprised. been around the block just a couple times. i've seen different things in the past, but this is very serious business, and apparently some members of congress just don't get it. the -- you can call it whatever you want to call it, but certainly fiscal is in front of it and it's not good. taxes going up for all americans, not a good thing. significant, possibly devastating budget cuts coming down to certainly state and local governments, not a good thing. and so this seemingly bad game of chicken, you know, this is not some schoolyard game here. this is about people's lives, it's about their livelihoods, it's about the future of cities, it's about programs that need the dollars to provide services that the citizens want and expect is lack of doing your job. and so congress, it seems to me, should be flying, literally, back into session to get things done. the marketplace will not reward this inactivity, but more importantly, the psychological confidence that citizens and the business community should have about the ability of congress and washingto

child that goes to public school in america? >> so, you know, let me -- i don't want to be cynical about this. but what we really need is actually less guns in schools, not more guns in schools. before i was aft president, i was president of the new york city teachers local and we have had police officers in schools and we have had metal detectors in schools. but police officers or armed guards did not stop the shooting in virginia tech. it did not stop the shooting in columbine. and what we're talking about here, if you actually take the nra's proposal to its logical conclusion, if we want to really protect all kids, we need to actually put an armed guard in every wing. maybe in front of every classroom. and that's why we've said that schools should be safe sanctuaries, not armed fortresses. are there some schools that need to have armed police officers? of course. but the nra's proposal is to put more guns in schools, not less guns in schools and to actually -- to actually make schools into armed fortresses as opposed to the safe sanctuaries to the learning conditions. >> mr. lapierre
